"Be Still and Know"
Things fall apart.I am told to wait.My heart feels as if it’ll burst from all the pain of a shattered dream.“Be still and know I am God” echoes across the cavern of grief.Waiting is hard when the claws of shame latch into a soul.“Trust me, O child of mine. For I have plans for you.”I hear you but trust is hardwhen anger burns red around my eyes and heart.“I am here with you, wherever you go.”Even to the depths of despair?Do you go there?“Even if you make your bed in Sheol—I will follow you there. For you are mine.”Here I am, Lord.Where do you want me to go?“Here I am, my child. Slip off your shoes, for you are on holy ground.I am right here with you.”Where you lead me,I will follow.“Why don’t we just stay here and rest for a while?”Yes, yes.Rest sounds like it is for the best.“Be still, know I am God.Wait on me.You are safe here in the shadow of my wings.”I am here and you are too.Thank you.Thank you.Thank you. This poem was inspired by various scripture verses that came to mind as I wrote it. I did not cite them here, because I did not go back to look at where they came from. The "here I am" was inspired by one of my favorite hymns, one we sung at my ordination service, "Here I am, Lord" also known as "I, the Lord of sea and Sky." It was also inspired by the call narrative of Moses found in Exodus 3:4.
