Revolving Sushi
The launching of A Year at the Table has caused me to think about food even more than I normally do. I find myself thinking about the food I prepare, the food I eat at restaurants, and the food that someone prepares for me. The table is weaving itself into my life even more fully.
The food may be different each time and the company might change but I am finding love and healing at each table I visit. Something in me gets stitched up and taken care of when I find myself at a table with loved ones. Food has a distinct way of bringing us together. And as we gather around it, with people we love, the love seems palpable and it seeps into our hearts, minds, and tummies with each delicious bite we take.
Last week, I branched out and tried something new. I went with a couple of friends to a sushi place; however, this wasn't just any sushi place it was a revolving sushi place. The sushi comes right by your table on a conveyor belt! Talk about a fun time. We all arrived at the table weary from the day, a bit frustrated, a bit bruised from the way our week was going but as we sat down, as we gathered around the table and watched that sushi zoom by us something lifted. I tried different types of sushi, allowing the flavors and textures to surprise and delight me and I found myself relaxing with the bruises on my heart and pride being tended to. Surrounded by people I love and a whole bunch of sushi zooming by I found myself surprised by the healing. My hunch just might be right; the table in its various forms can offer us healing.
The table rarely looks the same and in some cases it might just downright surprise you the form that it does take--like sushi on a conveyor belt. But my hope is that whatever type of table you find yourself seated at, you put your phone away (unless it is to take a photo), you look around you into the faces of the people you are breaking bread with, and you just be. I hope you come to the table and find acceptance, love, healing, rest, nourishment, and perhaps even God.
Peace and blessings friends!
